Description

Selby, Yorkshire born outside left Jack Byers started his football career with Knaresborough in 1920 and played for his hometown club Selby Town in 1921 before signing for First Division Huddersfield Town in 1921, making his Football League debut at Tottenham Hotspur in March 1922 without being able to really establish himself, scoring 4 goals in 12 appearances before being signed by Blackburn Rovers in April 1923. He became a regular in their 1923-24 campaign but after only nine months at Ewood Park he was signed by West Bromwich Albion in January 1924 after 2 goals in 28 appearances for Rovers.

He stayed over four years at The Hawthorns and played 39 matches during the campaign as they finished runners up in the League Championship in 1924-25, and he stayed with them a season after their relegation from the First Division in 1927, by when he had lost his regular first team berth in April 1927 before joining Birmingham & District League club Worcester City in 1928 after scoring 12 goals in 111 appearances for The Baggies. He helped Worcester City to win the Birmingham & District League in 1928-29 and spent 1929-30 at Third Division (South) club Torquay United but didn’t break into their first eleven before returning to the Midlands to play for Kidderminster Harriers in 1930 before his eventual retirement.
