Stafford born left half Alf Riley joined Wellington Town in 1911 before moving to hometown club Stafford Rangers in 1912, from where he signed for Second Division Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1913, making his Football League debut against Huddersfield Town in April 1914, his only appearance of his debut season. He made a further 10 appearances prior to the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915 due to the onset of the First World War but resumed with Wolves in 1919, establishing himself as a regular in the first eleven and missing only 2 matches in 1920-21 as Wolves went on a Cup run that took them to the FA Cup Final, where they lost 1-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge. He played another two seasons for Wolves but lost his place in August 1922, playing only once more for the club that November, and finished with his football career after a single goal in 124 appearances for the Molineux club.
