Scotswood, County Durham born centre half Fred Reed played junior football in the North East for Newburn in 1909, Wesley Hall in 1910, Benwell in 1911 and Lintz Institute in 1912 before joining First Division West Bromwich Albion in 1914, making his Football League debut against Tottenham Hotspur in April 1915, playing 3 times that month before peacetime football was suspended due to the First World War, during which Reed served as a sergeant in the Royal Fusiliers.
After the War Reed returned to West Brom in 1919 but only played once as The Baggies won the 1919-20 League Championship, indeed he didn’t establish himself in the first eleven until 1923, and he became club captain in due course, playing 40 games as they finished League runners-up in 1924-25 and playing his last match of 154 during their 1926-27 relegation season before retirement, after which he became a coach at West Brom. He scored 5 goals for Albion.
