Bedlington, Northumberland born centre half Jack Rutherford played for Ashington in 1912 joining hometown club Bedlington in 1913, then spending part of 1914-15 at Tottenham Hotspur without making a first team appearance at White Hart Lane. He returned to the North East with Blyth Spartans later in 1914 and after the First World War joined Southern League club Luton Town in 1919, before a transfer to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1920, for whom he made his Football League debut in their inaugural League season against Southend United that September.
Rutherford scored twice in 29 appearances during the campaign before a move to First Division Cardiff City, where again he couldn’t get into the first eleven. He joined Bristol Rovers in the summer of 1922 and made 32 appearances, scoring once, for The Gas before joining non league Mold Town in 1923, and he subsequently played for Midland League club York City later that year. He returned to Football League action with Gillingham in November 1924, scoring 3 times in 89 appearances over the next three seasons before retiring from professional football.
He is probably the older brother of Jim Rutherford who also played for Ashington and Brighton.
