Poplar, London born left half Bill Stanton was originally a centre forward who began his football career with Wiseton and joined Worksop Town in 1909, moving to Second Division club Gainsborough Trinity in 1910. He made his Football League debut against Huddersfield Town in September 1910 the first of 9 appearances for Trinity in 1910-11 before returning to Worksop Town at the end of the season.
Stanton joined Rotherham County in July 1912, playing for them both sides of the First World War including a goal in 28 Second Division appearances after they’d been elected to the Football League immediately after the end of the War in 1919. He then joined newly elected Third Division (South) club Millwall in the summer of 1929, making 66 appearances, scoring 3 goals for The Lions over the next three seasons before joining Welsh League club Llanelly in 1923, his last recorded club before his eventual retirement.
