Description

Gainsborough, Lincolnshire born goalkeeper Herman Conway began his football career with hometown club Gainsborough Trinity in 1929 before joining Second Division club Burnley in 1930, making his Football League debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers in September 1930, and he soon established himself as Burnley’s principal glovesman in preference to George Sommerville making 31 appearances during his debut season. He enjoyed three further seasons at Turf Moor but shared goalkeeping duties with several other keepers during that time, making 87 appearances for The Clarets before moving to West Ham United in the close season of 1934.

Conway missed only one match in his first season at Upton Park making 127 appearances during his five seasons at West Ham, before joining Tunbridge Wells Rangers in 1939. After the Second World War he returned to senior action in the 1946 FA Cup, playing twice for Southend United before his eventual retirement.
