Description

Welton, Yorkshire born goalkeeper Walter Cook spent his early playing days in the West Riding local leagues, Cook made 11 appearances for Leeds City in 1918 as a ‘guest’ player. Following Leeds City’s expulsion from the Football League due to financial irregularities in the 1919-20 season, the Castleford-born keeper was released, without playing a league game, and signed for hometown Castleford Town in 1920 and made his senior debut in an FA Cup tie against Hednesford Town in January 1920, before joining Plymouth Argyle in the summer of 1921. Cook was unlucky to spend much of his time at Home Park as understudy to the great Plymouth keeper Fred Craig, making his Football League debut in December 1921 against Swansea Town. Cook found the redoubtable Craig very reliable and made just six appearences in Argyle’s second League season and one in the following campaign before leaving to join Brighton, where he featured more regularly in a two year stay playing 55 times over his two seasons at The Goldstone. He later made nine appearances for Stockport County in November and December 1928.
