Description

Douglas Water, Lanarkshire born wing half Jimmy Cringan, the younger brother of Sunderland, Celtic and Scottish international footballer Willie, played junior football for Douglas Water Thistle and after trials with Sunderland, Dunfermline and Falkirk in 1921 and a spell on the books at Bury during 1922-23 for whom he never made a first team appearance, he signed professional with First Division Birmingham in 1923.

He made his Football League debut that September at Sunderland and played 284 games for Blues over the next 10 years scoring 12 goals, playing exclusively in the First Division. He was part of Birmingham’s 1931 FA Cup Final team which narrowly lost 2-1 to West Bromwich Albion at Wembley but lost his place in 1932 and played only 8 times in his final two seasons at the club, leaving in the summer of 1934 to become player-manager of Midland League club Boston United. He then managed junior club Banbury Spencer from 1936 to 1961 when he retired from football.
