Stoke-on-Trent born winger Billy Tempest spent 1911-12 with Huddersfield Town but didn’t make their first eleven and returned to Potteries football with Trentham in 1912. After the First World War he joined hometown Second Division professional club Stoke, making his Football League debut against Barnsley in August 1919 and scoring his first goal a week later in a 2-1 victory in the return fixture at Oakwell. In 1920-21 he scored 10 goals as Stoke narrowly avoided relegation, and he missed only one game in 1921-22 as Stoke won promotion to the First Division, finishing runners up in the Second Division with 9 goals from Tempest helping their cause. However their return to the First Division ended in immediate relegation in 1923, and Tempest stayed one more season in the Second Division before joining neighbours Port Vale in the summer of 1924 after 24 goals in 174 appearances for The Potters. He had two seasons at Vale scoring 3 goals in 45 appearances as Vale finished both seasons in 8th place in the Second Division, before retiring from the professional game in 1926.
