Ashington born full back George Thompson started his football career with Bedlington United in 1913 from where he joined First Division Burnley in 1914 without playing for their first eleven before the interruption of the First World War. He returned to Turf Moor after the conflict and made his Football League debut at Liverpool in November 1919, playing 5 times for The Clarets in a season that saw them finish as runners up in the League Championship. However he couldn’t get into their team during their 1920-21 season when they went one better and won the League title, and moved to Rotherham County in May 1921, scoring once in 29 appearances in their inaugural Third Division (North) season before losing his place in the first team the next season, playing only 7 matches in 1922-23. He joined hometown club Ashington in January 1924 enjoying 3 seasons at the club scoring twice in 63 appearances before joining non league Pegswood United in 1926, but he returned to Ashington in July 1928 making his final appearance (and playing only one match during his second spell) at Lincoln City in April 1929 before retirement from the professional game.
