Seaham Harbour, County Durham born centre half Tom Thompson started his football career with Seaham Bible Class in 1913 from where he joined Seaham Albion a year later but soon the First World War interrupted his progress. After the War he spent 1919-20 on the books at Sunderland but failed to make their first eleven, moving to newly elected Third Division club Gillingham in the summer of 1920, making his Football League debut against Merthyr Town that September. Thompson scored once, in the return match at Merthyr Town a week after his debut, in 40 matches during Gillingham’s inaugural League campaign, in which they struggled at the foot of the table.
However he lost his place at the start of the new season and didn’t appear until Boxing Day, and he was less regular during The Gills’ subsequent campaigns although he did find the net again, in a 2-2 draw with Swansea Town in September 1922. He stayed four seasons at Priestfield, scoring twice in 76 appearances, before joining Southern League club Guildford United in 1924, his last recorded club.
