King’s Norton, Birmingham born inside forward (he played in all three inside positions) Herbert “Bert” Turner started his football career playing for junior club Darlaston in 1918 and after the First World War he spent 1919-20 on the books at hometown club Birmingham City without making their first eleven, from where he joined newly elected Football League Third Division club Merthyr Town in the summer of 1920.
He made his Football League debut for Merthyr at Gillingham in September 1920 and in his first season he scored 6 goals in 14 appearances, and in his second he was their top scorer with 13 goals from 38 matches. He played five seasons in total for Merthyr, scoring 35 goals in 146 appearances before joining Coventry City in March 1925. Having scored 7 times in 31 appearances for Coventry he joined non league Brierley Hill Alliance in 1926, but he returned to Football League action with Torquay United in June 1927, top scoring with 11 goals from 38 appearances for The Gulls during their inaugural Football League season, and scoring their first ever goal, a penalty in a 1-1 draw in their inaugural League fixture against Exeter City at Plainmoor in August 1927.
He moved on to Bristol Rovers in the close season of 1928 where he scored twice in 10 matches before re-joining Brierley Hill Alliance in 1929, joining Hinckley United later the same year. He went on to play for Standard Athletic in 1933 before his eventual retirement.
