Leyland, Lancashire born left half Joe Turner started his football career with hometown club Leyland in 1913 before joining Southern League club Portsmouth in January 1914, however his career was soon interrupted by the onsett of the First World War which forced the suspension of peacetime football in May 1915, during which he played wartime football for Pompey.
On the resumption of peacetime football in 1919, Turner was part of their 1919-20 Southern League Championship winning team, and when Portsmouth joined The Football League in 1920 Turner played in their inaugural League fixture against Swansea Town that August, scoring 3 goals in 22 appearances during their inaugural League campaign.
However he lost his place in April 1921 and only played 7 more times for Pompey in 1921-22, before moving back to Lancashire to join Preston North End in the 1922 close season having scored 15 goals in 79 appearances for Portsmouth either side of the War. He never made the Preston first team however, and retired from the professional game in 1923.
