Newhall, Derbyshire born wing half Heneage “Harry” Wileman started his football career with Burton United in 1908 soon after the club had lost its League status, and from there joined Chelsea in April 1909, spending 1909-10 on their books without making a first team appearance. He joined Southern League Southend United in July 1911 and played for them both sides of the First World War, and when they joined the Football League in 1920 he played in their inaugural League fixture against Brighton that August. He went on to make 62 Football League appearances for The Shrimpers in addition to his Southern League and FA Cup outings, scoring two League goals but never played again after Boxing Day 1921, possibly being forced to retire due to injury.
Wileman’s brother Arthur was also a footballer and they played together at Newhall Swifts, Burton United, Chelsea and Southend United. Arthur was killed in 1918 fighting during the First World War.
