Watford, Hertfordshire born right half Arthur “Ticker” Wright initially joined hometown Southern League club Watford as an amateur having played for local junior club Callow Land prior to the First World War, playing 3 times for the first team in wartime friendlies, scoring once. Wright almost certainly played as Watford finished runners up to Portsmouth in the 1919-20 Southern League Championship, before they helped to form the new Third Division in 1920. He was still an amateur when he made his only Football League appearance, playing for Watford in a 1-0 home win over Merthyr Town on 16th October 1920. He turned professional the following month and became a stalwart reserve-team half-back, staying at the club until the close season of 1926.
