Whitburn, County Durham born goalkeeper William Young started his football career with hometown junior club Whitburn in 1919 before moving to newly elected Football League club Brentford in 1920. He was handed the gloves for Brentford’s inaugural Football League match in August 1920 at Exeter City and although he only played 19 times in his debut season as Young battled for the goalkeeper’s jersey with cricketer Jack Durston. However he missed only one match in 1920-21 and was ever present in 1923-24 making 94 consecutive appearances between September 1922 and October 1924. However (for whatever reason) he left the club at the end of the 1924-25 season after 180 appearances for The Bees and finished his senior football career. For a short while Young was the club’s record Football League appearance maker until his total was overtaken by Jack Lane.
