Description

Hove born inside forward Almer Hall played for junior Sussex club Southwick before joining hometown professional club Brighton & Hove Albion in February 1931, but he couldn’t get into their first eleven and joined Tottenham Hotspur in September 1933, eventually making his Football League debut against Grimsby Town on Boxing Day 1934, scoring both goals in a 2-1 win, and scored at Goodison Park in his second game, in what was Tottenham’s relegation season during which he made 17 appearances. However the following season he only played 4 times and joined Southend United in May 1937. His 2 year spell at The Kursaal saw 10 goals in 41 appearances and in June 1939 he signed for Bradford City, although he only appeared once for The Bantams in one of the 3 “expunged” 1939-40 season openers.

He played wartime football appearing as a guest player for West Ham during the Second World War and formally joined them in December 1945, staying three seasons and scoring 14 times in 56 appearances at Unpton Park before moving to non-league Margate in 1950 as player-manager.

He played for the Kent club until 1953, when he retired from playing to concentrate on management, and remained the club’s manager until 1970, his twenty-year reign making him by far the club’s longest serving manager. He led the team to a host of regional cup finals, as well as taking them into the rounds proper of the FA Cup on eleven occasions, but was not able to bring them any significant success in league competition. After leaving Margate he had a spell as a scout for Luton Town.
