Heston, Middlesex born centre half Jimmy Eggleton served as a gunner in the Royal Artillery and joined Charlton Athletic from Slough having played Army representative football in 1920, initially as an amateur in September 1921, turning professional in January 1922 and making his Football League debut at Newport County that April. He was never a regular at The Valley and made 28 appearances for The Addicks before joining Watford for ÂŁ500 in December 1923. He was a strong- tackling centre-half who had several bursts of first-team action in his three years at Vicarage Road, scoring twice in 52 appearances before a spell at Lincoln City from October 1926 where he didn’t make a first team appearance, and he then began an association with Queens Park Rangers in October 1926 which lasted until the 1960’s and encompassed a variety of roles both sides of the Second World War. As a player he played until February 1929 making 43 appearances, he was then assistant trainer from 1930, their trainer by the close season of 1947, reserve team manager by 1954, and he remained in the club’s employment until the 1960s.
