After the end of the First World War, Rotherham born wing half Herbert “Bert” Emmett joined Midland League Rotherham Town but soon transferred to cross town Second Division rivals Rotherham County in the 1920 close season, making his Football League debut against Coventry City in August 1920. Initially a fringe player, by November 1921 he was a regular in their first team, and despite County’s relegation to the Third Division (North) in 1923, he continued to play for the club.
When County merged with Rotherham Town to form Rotherham United in 1926, he made his final 8 appearances of 178 in total under the merged club’s identity that November. He only ever scored once, in a 3-2 FA Cup defeat at First Division Bury in January 1926. He may be unique, but certainly he’s one of the very few players to have played for all three incarnations of “The Millers”, i.e. Rotherham Town, Rotherham County, and Rotherham United!
