Middlesbrough, Yorkshire born goalkeeper Des Fawcett started his football career with junior clubs Normanby Magnesite in 1921 and Loftus Albion in 1922 before joining hometown First Division club Middlesbrough in March 1923, spending time on their books without making their first eleven. He returned to Loftus Albion in 1924 from where he joined Second Division club Darlington in February 1926, making his Football League debut against Oldham Athletic in the Third Division that August after their relegation over the summer.
Fawcett played 32 matches for Darlington before joining Nelson in August 1928 where he made 23 appearances in a single season. However it brought him to the attention of Second Division neighbours Preston North End who signed him in August 1929 and during 1929-30 he was the principal goalkeeper at Deepdale, making 38 appearances for The Lambs, before losing the gloves to John Hampton and George Wolf, making only 7 more appearances over the next two seasons.
He joined Third Division (North) club York City in September 1932 and made 79 appearances over his two seasons at Bootham Crescent before a move to Mansfield Town in May 1934 where he made 78 appearances. His final League club was Rochdale, joining them in June 1936 and was their regular goalkeeper through to September 1938, in total making 98 appearances for Dale before joining non league club Wellington Town in the summer of 1939 after over 350 career appearances.
