Athlete born centre half Charlie Turner had played junior football for Manchester Central in 1931 and joined Stalybridge Celtic in 1932, from where he was signed by First Division Leeds United aged 21 in May 1933. He made his Football League debut against Middlesbrough in August 1933 but played mainly in the reserves making only 13 first team appearances before transferring to Southend United in June 1935. He then made 114 appearances for Southend before leaving for West Ham United in February 1938.
However he only made 11 league appearances for The Hammers before joining Hartlepool United at the beginning of the 1939-40 season, playing the first 3 matches of that season before the Second World War intervened and the season was abandoned. After the war, he moved back to Ireland to manage Shelbourne in the League of Ireland.
Turner was capped 10 times for the Republic of Ireland at senior level between 1936 and 1939.
NB Turner is in the middle of the three players in this photograph, the other players are Ted Fenton and Joe Cockroft.
