Doncaster, Yorkshire born wing half Jack Firth started his football career with junior club Woodlands Primitives in 1923, playing for Brodsworth Main Colliery in 1924. He spent 1925-26 with hometown Football League club Doncaster Rovers, as an amateur, without appearing for their first eleven. He then joined First Division Birmingham City in March 1926, making his Football League debut at Sheffield United in October 1927. He established himself as a first team regular in March 1929 but although he played in the 1931 FA Cup semi final win over Sunderland, he was not selected for the 1931 Final which Birmingham lost 3-1 to West Bromwich Albion.
After the season end he only played 14 more games over the next two seasons before joining Swansea Town in August 1933 after 8 goals in 98 appearances. At Swansea he was a regular for three seasons, scoring 16 times in 109 appearances, before joining Bury in May 1936, and although he scored 4 times in his 7 appearances for The Shakers he returned to play for Brodsworth Main Colliery later in 1937.
