Darlaston, Staffordshire born inside or outside right Eddie Gettins began his senior football career when he joined Second Division club Gainsborough Trinity in 1898, making his Football League debut at Loughborough in April 1899. A year later he established a regular first team berth, where he was their leading goalscorer in 1900-01 with 13 goals and an ever present in 1902-03, and by the time he joined First Division club Middlesbrough in May 1903 he had scored 31 goals in 116 appearances for Trinity.
At Middlesbrough he was employed exclusively on the right wing but he e fell out of favour at ‘Boro towards the end of 1904 and moved to Southern League club Reading in the summer of 1905 after 5 goals in 48 appearances. After two seasons at Elm Park he returned to Football League action with Second Division club Glossop in May 1907, where he converted to left back from October that year, making 42 appearances for The Hillmen over two seasons before joining Stockport County in May 1909. He finished his career with 67 appearances for The Hatters over the next two seasons before leaving professional football in 1911, joining non league club Haslingden, his last recorded club before his eventual retirement.
