Sunderland born centre half John Hardy played for Wearmouth Colliery in 1919 and Sunderland Celtic in 1920 before joining Second Division South Shields, making his Football League debut against Bristol City in November 1921. He soon established a regular berth in the first eleven and was an ever present in 1922-23, scoring 5 goals in 108 appearances before joining Derby County for £1,500 in August 1924. However he only appeared 3 times for The Rams, and left to join Grimsby Town a year later in July 1925.

He played 29 League matches as Grimsby won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1925-26, but he didn’t stay much longer in Cleethorpes having lost his place to Charlie Wrack, signing for Oldham Athletic for £750 in January 1927 after 5 goals in 51 appearances. His spell at Boundary Park lasted only until the end of the season, making only 2 appearances, before he re-joined South Shields that summer. He made a further 11 appearances for Shields in 1927-28, before joining non league Boldon Colliery Welfare in 1929 and playing for Scarborough in 1930. He also played for West Stanley the same year before joining Clapton Orient in September 1931, spending 1931-32 with The O’s, for whom he didn’t make a first team appearance. He finished his career by joining Silksworth Colliery in 1932.
