Sheffield born right half Ernie Jackson was on the books of Sheffield Wednesday during 1930-31 but didn’t make their first eleven, playing forĀ Atlas & Norfolk Works in 1931 before joining First Division Sheffield United in September 1932, making his Football League debut against Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 1933. He made 11 appearances as The Blades were relegated in 1934 and by 1936 had become a fixture in the first eleven.
He played for The Blades in their 1936 FA Cup Final appearance when they were narrowly beaten by Arsenal at Wembley, and made 23 League appearanceses as they were promoted as Second Division runners up in 1938-39, however the Second World War then took six years out of his career. Nonetheless he returned to Bramall Lane in 1946 and continued to play regularly until their relegation in 1949, moving to non league Boston United after 8 goals in 253 appearances.
NB in the photograph he stands on the left with Sheffield United team mate Albert Cox.
