Manchester born wing half Sam Johnson played junior football for Newton Heath Albion in 1903 and Lancashire Combination club Colne in 1904 before joining Second Division Blackpool in the close season of 1905, making his Football League debut against Gainsborough Trinity that September, scoring in a 2-2 draw. He was a regular performer in the Blackpool team in 1905-06 but made only 8 appearances the next season, and re-joined Colne in 1907 after that single goal in 38 appearances for The Seasiders. He then joined Southern League Exeter City in the close season of 1908, staying a single season before joining Coventry City in 1909 after 23 appearances. He spent 2 years at Highfield Road, before returning to Football League action with Leeds City, joining them in the summer of 1911. He was given his debut in the second game of the season and scored once in his seven appearances in 1911-12, lobbing beautifully over the Grimsby keeper’s head at Elland Road in January 1912. He was released after the arrival of Herbert Chapman at the end of a season that saw City having to apply for re-election and Johnson never played professionally again.
