Grantham, Lincolnshire born right winger Dickie Joynes played junior football for Newark Avenue in 1899 and joined Midland League Newark Town in 1900, before signing for First Division Notts County in 1901, for whom he made his Football League debut against Small Heath (now Birmingham City) in December 1901. He soon established himself in the first eleven, scoring 3 goals in 47 appearances, but he returned to Newark Town in 1903.
In May 1905 he moved to Southern League Brighton & Hove Albion where he spent three seasons, scoring 20 goals in 101 appearances, before following his Brighton manager Frank Scott-Walford with several of his team-mates to Second Division Leeds City in May 1908. He showed his versatility by featuring in three different positions in his first season, playing at outside right, inside right and inside left, and repeated the feat in his second season. Having scored once in 23 appearances he left Leeds in the summer of 1910 and didn’t play again professionally.
