Description

Aston-on-Trent, Derbyshire born goalkeeper Harry Linacre played junior football forĀ Aston-upon-Trent in 1896 and Draycott Mills in 1897 before joining Derby County in December 1898 as understudy to Jack Fryer, for whom he made his Football League debut against Notts County in February 1899. He made a further appearance at Liverpool in April but joined Nottingham Forest in August 1899, initially being understudy to Dan Allsopp, making 6 appearances in his debut season before becoming the number one choice from the beginning of the 1900-01 season.

Linacre was chosen to play twice for England in the spring of 1905. However, his England career lasted just five days. On 27th March 1905, Linacre kept goal against Wales at Anfield in a 3-1 victory. He then played against Scotland in a 1-0 victory at The Crystal Palace on 1st April 1905. He also made one appearance for The Football League when he played against The Scottish League in a 3-2 victory in Glasgow in March 1905.

He took part in the first foreign tour by Nottingham Forest to South America in 1905 when theyĀ toured Uruguay and Argentina. The trip had been organised at the club after a guaranteed $200 fee was offered. Thirteen players and two officials were despatched on 19th May, three weeks after the football season ended. The journey out to South America took three weeks and they had to run around the steamship Danube’s decks to keep in training.

In total there were eight matches in South America and sixty goals were scored with only three being against Nottingham Forest, who did not lose a match on the tour. It is said that the Argentinian team Club AtlƩtico Independiente changed their colours to red after seeing the Nottingham Forest players play. The tour started at Montevideo and then had a number of matches against Argentinian teams, firstly at Santa Fe and then in Buenos Aires.

The following season Nottingham Forest were relegated with Linacre an ever present, but they immediately won the Second Division Championship in 1906-07, with Linacre only missing a handful of games. After 332 appearances for Nottingham Forest, he hung up his gloves in the summer of 1909.

His uncles Frank and Fred Forman also both played for Derby County, Nottingham Forest and England.
