Description

Lochee, Dundee born inside or outside left John “Jock” Malloch began his football career with junior club East Craigie from where he joined Scottish League club Dundee in 1897. After a season at Dens Park he was signed by Southern League club Brighton United in 1898, spending two seasons on the south coast until their resignation from the League in March 1900.

He then joined First Division club Sheffield Wednesday over the close season and made his Football League debut at Manchester City in September 1900. He helped The Wednesday win back to back League Championships in 1902-03 and 1903-04, missing only one match in their first Championship. However from the start of the 1905-06 season he was increasingly a fringe player and during his last three seasons at Hillsborough he was restricted to a dozen appearances a season, playing his last match in April 1907 although he wasn’t included in their successful FA Cup campaign that season, thereafter not getting in the first team whatsoever during 1907-08.

After 11 goals in 153 appearances Malloch joined Second Division club Barnsley in the 1908 close season, but failed to make their first eleven during 1908-09 and moved on to non league South Kirkby in 1909, playing subsequently for Frickley Colliery in 1910 before his eventual retirement.

(N.B. he was probably the father of Gavin Malloch who also played for Derby County in the late 1920’s and for Sheffield Wednesday in the early 1930’s).
