Description

Southport born centre half Jack Marshall played junior football for St Paul’s of Southport in 1911 before joining Rochdale as an amateur in 1913. His career was interrupted by the First World War, during which he had a spell in Ireland with Shelbourne in 1918, but after the War he returned to England and joined his hometown professional club Southport Central in 1919.

He stayed less than a single season at Haig Avenue before being signed by First Division Preston North End in February 1920, making his Football League debut against Manchester City the same month. But he was largely a fringe player at Deepdale, playing 3 cup ties in the FA Cup run that saw the club lose to Huddersfield Town in the 1922 FA Cup Final, although he wasn’t selected for the Final itself. He broke into the team in October 1922, playing 29 times before the end of the 1922-23 season, but fell out of favour thereafter and joined Wigan Borough in June 1924 after 57 appearances for Preston.

He had a full season at Springfield Park, scoring twice in 35 appearances, before re-joining now Football League competitors Southport in August 1925, where he scored once in 13 appearances during 1925-26.  He then returned to Wigan Borough for a final season, making only 7 appearances before calling time on his professional football career.
