Bowling, Dunbartonshire born inside forward Tom McInnes started his football career with Dalmuir Thistle in 1888 before playing for both Newcastle East End in 1889 and Newcastle West End in 1890, the two clubs would soon combine to form Newcastle United. He returned to Scotland in 1891 with Clyde, and after a season moved to First Division Nottingham Forest in the 1892 close season, making his Football League debut at Everton in September 1892, Forest’s inaugural Football League fixture. The highlight of his 7 seasons at The City Ground was their 1898 FA Cup Final win when they defeated Derby County 3-1 in the Final at The Crystal Palace.
McInnes left Forest in 1899 after 55 goals in 186 appearances, spending the 1899-1900 season in the Southern League with Bristol Rovers. He may have spent a brief period during this season with Third Lanark, though without appearing in the Scottish League. McInnes moved back to England to sign for Lincoln City in September 1900, spending three seasons with the club in the Second Division, and was their leading scorer in the 1901-02 season, with 14 goals in all competitions. After 25 goals in 90 appearances he returned to Scottish League football for a final season with Port Glasgow Athletic in 1904-05 before retirement.
