Ilford, Essex born left back Baden Herod had a lengthy career in professional football. He played as an amateur at Barking Town, Ilford and Great Eastern Railway Works before joining Charlton Athletic in November 1921 making his Football League debut at Norwich City the following month, playing twice in Charlton’s inaugural season as a League club before establishing himself in the first eleven from the following August. In his final season with The Addicks he missed only one match, and in six and a half seasons at The Valley he scored twice, both penalties, in 236 appearances, before Brentford paid a club record £1,500 transfer fee for him in June 1928.
After 30 games for Brentford during 1928-29 they sold him on to Tottenham Hotspur for £4,000 in February 1929 and he played 59 times for Spurs over the next two years, including missing only one match in their 1929-30 campaign, before losing his place in September 1930. He moved north to Chester in July 1931, playing two seasons for the newly elected Third Division (North) club including playing in their inaugural League fixture against Wigan Borough in August 1931, missing only two matches in their inaugural season as they finished third in the division, and scoring once, a further penalty against Tranmere Rovers in March 1932, in 87 appearances for The Seals, before Herod returned south to join Swindon Town in July 1933.
An ever present during The Robins’ 1933-34 campaign, Herod played 89 times for them over the next two seasons. A final move saw him return to London with Clapton Orient in July 1935, where he made 62 appearances in two seasons before his eventual retirement in 1937, already aged 37, in a career of 563 League and Cup appearances in total, considerable for the era.
