Description

Chryston, Lanarkshire born goalkeeper Archie Montgomery began his football career with Chryston Athletic in 1892 and joined Glasgow Rangers in 1893, making his Scottish League debut against St Mirren in April 1894 and making a total of 8 appearances for Rangers before joining Second Division Bury in April 1895. Montgomery made his Football League debut at Newton Heath (now Manchester United) in April 1895 and played in two of their final three League matches and their Test Match victory over Liverpool that saw them confirmed as Second Division Champions. He was in Bury’s goal for the next ten seasons, but despite playing 228 matches for Bury, he was in goal for neither their 1900 nor their 1903 FA Cup Final triumphs, losing out to Fred Thompson and Hugh Monteith respectively.

In 1905 he joined Manchester United as understudy to Harry Moger, and played 3 games for them in September 1905 before returning to Bury, where he became their manager in February 1907, and despite relegation to the Second Division in 1912, Montgomery remained in the post until the end of the 1914-15 season, when peacetime football was suspended due to the onset of the First World War. After the War he managed Albion Rovers from 1920 to 1922.

His younger brother was Jack Montgomery who played for Tottenham Hotspur and was a stalwart at Notts County for many seasons.
