Hamilton, Lanarkshire born centre half William Paterson began his football career with Quarter United in 1929, joining Denny Hibernian in 1930. He joined Scottish League Morton in 1931 before going to play in the Irish League, initially for Ballymena in 1932 and then for Belfast Celtic and Distillery in 1933. He returned to Scotland and after a trial with East Fife he joined Broadway United, returning to the Scottish League with Dundee and Arbroath in 1934. In 1935 he joined Raith Rovers, joining Stenhousemuir later the same year.
In 1936 he moved south to join Third Division (North) Lincoln City, making his Football League debut at Chester in November. He played once more for Lincoln in a 5-0 win over Hull City in January 1937, before moving to Mansfield Town in the close season of 1937. In 1937-38 he was a regular in The Stags’ line up making 44 appearances across the campaign, but his career was ended by the outbreak of the Second World War, by when he had made 69 appearances.
NB in the photograph he seems to be wearing a Lincoln City shirt.
