Pearson made his Football League debut in December 1927, in a Division Two match against South Shields, Albion having been relegated that summer. In 1930-31 he was an ever present as he helped the club to achieve promotion to the First Division, finishing Second Division runners up, and played in the 1931 FA Cup Final, in which Albion beat Birmingham 2-1 at Wembley Stadium. In April 1932 he earned his only cap for England, marking the occasion with a clean sheet in a 3-0 win over Scotland at Wembley.

Pearson also kept goal in the 1935 FA Cup Final, but this time earned only a runners-up medal as his team lost 4-2 to Sheffield Wednesday. After making 303 appearances for West Bromwich Albion, he joined Millwall for a £300 transfer feein August 1937. He won the Third Division (South) Championship in his first season at The Den and remained with Millwall until his retirement in 1940, making 45 appearances, though he did appear as a guest player for West Ham United during the Second World War.

He was the son of Hubert Pearson, the Albion goalkeeper from 1907 to 1924, and the younger brother of Horace Pearson, who played in goal for Blackpool, Bristol City, Coventry City and Newport County. He was also a first cousin of Birmingham and England goalkeeper Harry Hibbs, his opposite number in the 1931 FA Cup Final.
