West Bromwich born centre forward Billy Poole was originally a defender and played non league football with Kidderminster Harriers in 1920 before before joining Third Division (South) Merthyr Town in May 1921, making his Football League debut at Millwall that September. He played 11 times scoring once for the Welsh side before earning a move to Stoke in April 1922. He played in the remaining 6 matches of the 1921-22 season as Stoke gained promotion to the First Division, but Poole only managed 6 more matches the following season in the top flight and left for Watford in July 1923, signing for £250. He spent two seasons with The Hornets and it was here that he featured at centre forward scoring 9 goals in 43 appearances, before joining Coventry City in September 1925.
He scored 6 times for Coventry in 17 appearances during 1925-26 before returning to non league football with Kidderminster Harriers the following summer, joining Yeovil & Petters United in 1927, but he returned to Football League action with a brief second spell at Merthyr Town in July 1928, making 2 further League appearances in the autumn of 1928. He returned to non league football with Wellington Town in the 1929 close season and then with Stourbridge in 1930 but once again returned to The Football League with Walsall, playing twice for them in February 1932, before finishing his career at Dudley Town whom he joined later that year.
