Description

Edmonton, near Enfield born right back Fred Channell began his football career with Harwich & Parkeston in 1927 and played for Haywards Heath in 1928 before joining the books of Tottenham Hotspur, spending 1930-31 at White Hart Lane without making their first eleven. After a trial in 1931 at Clapton Orient he moved to Southern League club Peterborough & Fletton United in 1932. He went on to play for the Spurs nursery club Northfleet United later the same year before he re-joined The Lilywhites in 1933, making his Football League debut against Sunderland in a First Division clash in October that year.

At the end of the season he played in Tottenham’s Sheriff of London Charity Shield 7-4 win over The Corinthians, his 25th appearance of his debut season as Spurs finished third in the League Championship, and he continued as a regular in the first team the next season missing only one game all season, although Tottenham suffered relegation at the season end. Channell stayed with Spurs, and was again a regular in the first team, however he suffered a career ending cruciate ligament injury in March 1936 and never played again, having scored once for Tottenham, in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland in February 1935, in 110 appearances.
