Basford born inside forward Albert Pynegar played for Eastwood Rangers and Sutton Town prior to World War One but after the conflict had ended he joined Second Division Leicester City, making his Football league debut against Bury in September 1920 scoring twice in a 4-0 victory. In 3 years at Leicester he scored 21 goals in 48 games, before signing for Coventry City in January 1924, scoring a hat-trick against Oldham that April, the following season he was the club’s top scorer with 18 goals which included a hat-trick against Stoke City.
He joined Oldham Athletic in the summer of 1925 scoring 55 goals in 138 games for The Latics and was Oldham’s top-scorer in the 1926-27 and 1927-28 seasons with 19 and 18 goals respectively, before joining Port Vale in January 1929, in a deal where he and £1,300 were exchanged for Stewart Littlewood. He scored a hat-trick in an 8-1 victory over West Bromwich Albion at The Old Recreation Ground on 9th March, and then four goals in a 5-0 win over Bristol City on 4th May. Despite these comprehensive victories, and his record of ten goals in 18 games, Vale were relegated from the Second Division at the end of the 1928-29 season. In the 1929-30 season, Pynegar scored 22 goals in 33 games, whilst strike partner Sam Jennings claimed 27 goals, to help the club win the Third Division (North) Championship. This tally of Pynegar’s included a hat-trick against New Brighton on 9th September.
In the 1930-31 campaign he scored three goals in nine games, before he was dropped from the first team. He put in a transfer request which was granted when he was transferred to Chesterfield in October 1930 after 35 goals in 59 Vale appearances. The Spireites won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1930-31, with Pynegar scoring 26 goals in 29 games. He scored 13 goals in the Second Division the following season, but after 40 goals in 67 appearances he then moved to Rotherham United in a player-exchange for Jimmy McCormick, where he scored 4 goals in 17 Third Division North games in the 1932-33 season before re-joining non league Sutton Town in 1933, already aged 38.
