Ayr born wing half Samuel Aitken started with Ayr Parkhouse in 1899 before joining Ayr United in 1900, spending three years at Somerset Park before joining First Division Middlesbrough, for whom he made his Football League debut at Newcastle United in November 1903. He played for them over the next seven seasons, becoming club captain, and was an ever present in 1907-08 as ‘Boro finished sixth in the League Championship.
That season Aitken scored a memorable winning goal in a 2-1 win over eventual League Champions Manchester United on 14th September 1907 when in the 36th minute he fired an unstoppable shot from 40 yards past Harry Moger, a goal that ranks among the best ever seen at Ayresome Park. He scored 6 goals in 242 appearances for ‘Boro and played his entire Middlesbrough career in the First Division before returning to Scotland to join Raith Rovers in the 1910 close season.
