Milford, Derbyshire born winger Elijah Allsopp remained an amateur footballer throughout his career, which began with Worksop Town in 1891. He joined still Lancashire League club Bury in 1892 before signing for Second Division Notts County in March 1894 shortly before their FA Cup triumph, in which he didn’t play. He made his Football League debut, scoring in a 5-0 victory over Ardwick (now Manchester City) the same month, and became a regular in the Notts County line up the following season, when he was the club’s top goalscorer with 17 goals as they finished runners up in the Second Division, although they missed out on promotion to the top flight being beaten by Derby County in the Test Matches.
Switching to the half back line he played a further two seasons for County, notably helping them to secure the Second Division Championship in 1897, but he retired (probably through injury) before the club’s entry into the First Division having scored 22 goals in 63 appearances for The Magpies.
