Kilmarnock, Lanarkshire born centre half George Anderson joined hometown Scottish League club Kilmarnock, starting in their junior team (known as the Rugby XI), making his Scottish League debut in a 2-1 win at Renton in March 1897. Over the next eight years at Rugby Park he was known as a tough and uncompromising defender and scored 12 goals in 176 appearances for Killie, his final appearance coming against Dundee in February 1905. He helped Kilmarnock to the Scottish Cup Final in 1898 which they lost to Rangers, as well as consecutive Second Division Championships in 1898 and 1899 before their election to the First Division.
He first represented The Scottish League in a 2-1 win over The Irish League in Belfast in February 1901, and a week later he won a full international cap as Scotland beat Ireland 11-0 at Celtic Park, Glasgow, in what proved his only Scottish international appearance. He made a further appearance for The Scottish League in a defeat to The Football League at St James’ Park, Newcastle in March 1902.
