Description

Sunderland born left half Arthur Andrews began his football career with Lambton Star immediately after the First World War and signed for Durham City as an amateur in May 1920, making his Football League debut at Rochdale in March 1922 and turning professional soon thereafter. He had scored twice in 13 appearances for Durham City when he was sold to First Division club Sunderland in November 1922, but played only twice during the remainder of the season as Sunderland finished runners up in the League Championship to Liverpool.

He established a regular place in Sunderland’s first eleven from September 1923 and remained a regular feature in the team for seven seasons, during which they finished third in the League Championship on 3 occasions and 4th in 1928-29, scoring the first of his two goals for The Wearsiders in a 4-1 win at Aston Villa in April 1925. His second goal came less than a month before his final game for Sunderland, in a win over Sheffield Wednesday in March 1931, Andrews having lost his regular place in their starting eleven in September 1930 in a season when he played only 9 matches.

After 245 appearances for Sunderland he left Roker Park to join Blyth Spartans, and subsequently joined Ashington in 1933, subsequently playing for Spennymoor United the same year before his eventual retirement.

NB in the photograph the other Sunderland players are Billy Clunas, Evelyn Morrison and Jock McDougall.
