Barlborough, Derbyshire born right back James Ashford began his football career with Brodsworth Main Colliery and at the end of the First World War he joined Ebbw Vale in 1918, from where he was signed by First Division club Chelsea in March 1920, making his Football League debut at Middlesbrough in April 1921, playing the last 4 matches of the season. However over the next four seasons, very much on the fringe, he only featured in 4 more matches, the last of which was a 4-0 defeat in a Second Division match at Leicester City in September 1924, and in June 1925 Ashford joined Third Division (North) club Doncaster Rovers.
He had a single season at Belle Vue, playing 26 matches for Donny, before joining Bristol Rovers in May 1926, where he featured 17 times for The Pirates during the first half of the season before losing his place in February 1927. He then moved to Midland League club Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1928, his final recorded club before his eventual retirement.
NB in the photograph Bob McNeil and Head Trainer Jack Whitley have a slap fight in training watched by Jack Harrow, Albert Thain, James Ashford, Fred Barrett and Willie Whitton.
