Description

Warrington born full back Jack Astley joined Southport from local junior football in 1931, making his Football League debut against Darlington in April 1932 and playing once more before the end of the 1931-32 season. However he moved to Irish League side Shelbourne that summer and didn’t return until Second Division Brentford signed him in the summer of 1933, with Astley playing 41 games in his first season at Griffin Park as Brentford finished 4th in the League. They won the Second Division Championship the following season but Astley only made one appearance, followed by 8 First Division appearances in 1935-36 before he was signed by Coventry City in February 1936. He helped them win the Division Three (South) Championship that season, and continued to play for them until peacetime football was suspended in September 1939 due to the outbreak of World War Two, making 149 appearances for the Sky Blues before retirement.
