South Shields, County Durham born right half Joe Bainbridge had started with Blyth Spartans before joining Second Division Blackpool in November 1910, making his Football League debut against Gainsborough Trinity in January 1911. Having began his career at full back, he became a regular member of the first team in 1912, scoring 9 goals at centre forward in 1912-13 while mainly playing at right half, and was an ever present in 1914-15 when he played much of the season at right half. However the cessation of football due to the First World War saw him lose his place by the time peacetime football resumed, and he only played 3 more matches in the first two post war seasons before moving to Southport in 1921 after 12 goals in 115 games for The Seasiders. At Southport he played in their inaugural Football League fixture at Durham City in August 1921, and although he was never a regular, he made 68 appearances at full back during his three seasons at Haig Avenue before his retirement at the end of the 1924-25 season.
