Ardsley, Yorkshire born left half Charlie Baines began his football career with Ardsley Athletic after the First World War, from where he joined Second Division Barnsley in 1920, making his Football League debut against Cardiff City in February 1921, his only appearance of his debut season. He broke into the first team from December 1921 and helped Barnsley finish third in the Second Division that season, narrowly missing promotion to the top flight. Baines spent the rest of the 1920’s as a regular in The Tykes’ first team, ever present in 1922-23 and missing only 3 matches over the following two seasons. In 1929-30, after rarely missing matches, he played less regularly, making only 23 appearances during the campaign, and he played his final three matches for Barnsley in the first half of the 1930-31 season, retiring in 1931 having scored 6 goals in 339 appearances, only ever playing in the second tier.
