Description

York born centre forward Reg Baines was at York City first in 1927 whilst the club was playing in the Midland League before joining Selby Town a year later. He had a further spell with Selby Town in 1930 after a year with Scarborough in 1929-30. From Selby he re-joined York City, by now in the Football League, in September 1931, making his debut at Carlisle United that October, scoring in a 1-1 draw. His prolific goalscoring at York saw him the club’s top scorer for both his seasons there with 28 and 29 goals respectively in only 73 appearances, no surprise when First Division Sheffield United stepped in for his signature but his 5 goals in 10 appearances couldn’t save the Blades from relegation in 1933-34.

He moved on to Doncaster Rovers in the summer of 1934 and his 3 seasons at Belle Vue again saw plenty of goals with him scoring 21 goals as Doncaster won the Third Division (North) Championship in 1934-35, and then top scoring in 1935-36 with another 19 goals. In total his spell there bought 44 goals in 81 appearances before he re-joined York City for 1937-38 scoring 28 goals in 48 matches including 5 FA Cup goals as York lost a 6th round replay to Huddersfield Town. Once again his form attracted a move, this time with Barnsley, but he only made one appearance for them at Accrington in December as they won the Third Division (North) Championship, and he was not retained, moving to Halifax Town. His career was cut short after a goal in 2 appearances by the onset of World War Two.
