Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire born left back George Baker began his football career with New Tupton Ivanhoe before joining Second Division Chesterfield Town in the 1905 close season, making his Football League debut against Grimsby Town that September. Missing only 4 matches during his debut season, he scored his only two career goals against Leicester Fosse and Wolverhampton Wanderers in April 1907 when deputising at centre forward, but left the club to join non league Clay Cross in the 1907 close season after 68 appearances, but returned to Saltergate a year later, making a further 18 appearances, however he left The Spireites at the end of 1908-09 when they lost their League status.
Baker joined First Division Preston North End in the summer of 1909 and spent four seasons at Deepdale, but stayed on the fringes of the first team making 14 of his 24 appearances for The Lilywhites during 1911-12, in a season that Preston suffered relegation. He played only once as Preston won the Second Division Championship the following season, before leaving Deepdale to join non league Shirebrook in the summer of 1913.
