Description

Scunthorpe, Lincolnshire born right back Jeff Barker began his football career with Goole Town, joining Midland League Scunthorpe & Lindsey United in 1935. His exceptional skills led to him being signed by Aston Villa for a fee of £400 in November 1936, with Barker making his Football League debut against Burnley in November 1937. He remained at Villa for nine years but only managed three League appearances, all in late 1937, before his career was interrupted by the outbreak of the Second World War.

He continued to play for Villa in the wartime leagues, making six appearances and also guested for Blackpool, Rochdale, Walsall, Watford and Huddersfield Town. In August 1942, he made a single guest appearance for Dundee United in Scotland.

He was signed by First Division Huddersfield Town in November 1945 and made his competitive debut in the 1946 FA Cup, where he made 71 appearances before returning to Scunthorpe United in August 1948. When The Iron was accepted into the Football League in 1950, Barker was a near ever present in their first season, playing 42 League games, including playing in their inaugural League fixture against Shrewsbury Town. He played his last match for Scunthorpe in March 1952 before his retirement having scored once, a penalty in a defeat at Darlington in November 1950, in 78 appearances during their League era.

In 1974, he was caretaker manager in charge of Scunthorpe United for three games while a new manager was being approached.

His son John also played for Scunthorpe United, making over 250 appearances in the late 1960’s through to the mid 1970’s.
