Description

Woodford, County Galway born left back Fred Barrett began his senior football career with Irish League club Belfast Celtic in 1914 and won multiple honours with Celtic during his time there including the Irish League Championship in 1915 and 1920, and the Irish Cup in 1918. He was selected for The Irish League in a 2-2 draw with The Football League at Anfield in November 1919, and the following summer he transferred to First Division club Chelsea, for whom he made his Football League debut against Manchester United that September.

Never a regular at Chelsea until after they had been relegated to the Second Division in 1924, he made nearly half his 70 appearances for The Pensioners in their 1925-26 campaign, when he also scored 5 of his 6 goals for Chelsea, before returning to Irish League football in 1927 when he joined Dundalk, moving to Ards in 1928, his last known club before his retirement.

NB in the photograph Bob McNeil and Head Trainer Jack Whitley have a slap fight in training watched by Jack Harrow, Albert Thain, James Ashford, Fred Barrett and Willie Whitton.
